RLT after HBOT: possible synergies in the literature
Mitochondria are already "fully fueled" with oxygen
After an HBOT session (especially at 1.8–2.0 ATA), the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood plasma is increased 10- to 20-fold; this state persists for about 30 to 90 minutes after leaving the chamber. It is discussed whether the mitochondrial enzyme cytochrome c oxidase, whose activity is normally slightly limited by low oxygen, can then work closer to full capacity.
Red light (630–850 nm) acts primarily through this exact enzyme
RLT is described as triggering the release of nitric oxide (NO) from cytochrome c oxidase and thereby supporting the electron transport chain. When more oxygen is available after HBOT, the freed binding site could be occupied by oxygen. It is hypothesised that this may increase ATP production (cellular energy) and ROS signalling.
Scientific observations and practical application
The literature discusses whether an RLT session within 30 to 60 minutes after an HBOT session could complement the observations described in HBOT studies (e.g., on telomere length, senescent cells and cognitive scores). We are not aware of controlled studies on this combination.
Some facilities therefore offer the sessions in the order HBOT first, followed by 15 to 20 minutes of full-body red light. This is a practical observation, not a recommendation with proven effect.
