Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT, pressure chamber therapy) is a treatment method in which pure oxygen is inhaled under increased (hyperbaric) ambient pressure. Under normal conditions, the hemoglobin in red blood cells is already more than 98% saturated with oxygen, so only a limited further increase is possible when breathing normal air.

When pure oxygen is inhaled under increased ambient pressure, additional oxygen dissolves directly in the blood plasma. This follows Henry's law, which describes the dissolution of gases in liquids.

Under hyperbaric conditions, substantially more oxygen can dissolve in the blood plasma than under normal pressure and oxygen conditions.
